Dental Cleanings

Everyone over the age of four or five should visit the dentist for a professional hygiene appointment twice per year. At Broadway Dental Excellence, we have four specially-trained hygienists on staff to ensure convenient scheduling of regular appointments for all of our patients.

Your hygienist will begin your cleaning by exploring the surface of your teeth to determine if you have cavities and to examine the quality of existing fillings.

The hygienist will then inspect your gums for periodontal disease, the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. The hygienists are specially trained to detect, deter, and treat gum disease. We prefer to help you maintain optimal oral health so that you never have to worry about gum disease. However, if you develop periodontal problems, we’re here to help you.

Next, your hygienist will carefully clean your teeth with a variety of tools to remove any hard mineral buildup (tartar) from your teeth. Then, your teeth will be flossed and polished. If your hygienist finds tooth decay or gum disease, they will talk with you about your brushing or flossing habits and changes that will benefit you. In some cases, the dentist will be consulted and may recommend further treatment. If your teeth and gums appear to be healthy, your hygienist will probably recommend that you continue your brushing and flossing as usual.

SUMMARY OF A DENTAL CLEANING APPOINTMENT

  • Tartar Removal — Calculus, or tartar, is hardened plaque that has firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and must be removed by a dental hygienist.
  • Plaque Removal — Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on your teeth. It’s a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  If not periodically removed, the bacteria produce toxins that infect and inflame the gums, the warning signs of periodontal disease.
  • Teeth Polishing — Polishing removes stains and plaque that are not removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
  • Home Care Instructions — You’ll leave each dental hygiene visit with clear, easy-to-follow instructions on how to properly care for your teeth and continue to keep your winning smile!  And, we just might have a tooth brush, toothpaste, dental floss or a lip gloss for you as a parting gift!
